Sage is toilet-trained!

I know this may not seem like a big deal to those of you who don't have children, but believe me, it's beeeg. So big that I offered her anything she wants (barring an actualy pony) as a reward; she told me she wants a stuffed toy crocodile "to scare 'Captaim' Hook", as she calls him.

Hopefully, she will look at said crocodile in the future, and forgive her mother for actually discussing her bathroom business in a public forum like this blog.

princess party postscript

Thanks to everyone who came and attended Sagey's third birthday!

Unfortunately, the little girl was suffering from a bad cold, and was therefore not her usual sunny self, but she cheered up considerably after the party, when it was down to just the uncles and aunts she feels more comfortable with... and yes, when it came time to open presents!

Despite the fact that she got three toy pianos (two of them exactly the same, at that!), Sage seemed enraptured with her pile of toys and books, and will no doubt be delighted again today, when she comes home from visiting pals to find a last present, mailed all the way from Davao by her Uncle Benjie.

She also got some cute outfits, which probably delighted only her mother; and thanks to Uncle Jason, it looks like we will be watching Barbie videos ad infinitum for the foreseeable future--which the aforementioned mother finds slightly less delightful.

I am a fairy tale and folklore buff, and it's giving me a bit of trouble explaining to Sage why the version of Rapunzel I originally told her did not include a cutesy purple dragon. Of course, if I can exclude the part about the thorns piercing the prince's eyes, I guess Mattel can do whatever they want with the story. Birthdays and bowdlerization... it's all about evolution, I suppose.

THE PRINCESS IS TURNING THREE!

Yup, it's true, Sage's third birthday is coming up this February 14th. So for all the wonderful people who have asked me what presents she wants, Dean and I took her window shopping and compiled the following wish list:
1. a Beauty and the Beast Play-Doh set
2. a giraffe stuffed toy from the Toy Kingdom stuffed animals section (There are big and medium sitting giraffes, and small standing giraffes. She wants the small standing type.)
3. a toy xylophone
4. any books suitable for a three-year-old, particularly those erasable hardboard learn-to-write ones (Powerbooks gift certificates would also be highly appreciated!)
5. any kind of fun art materials, such as crayons, paint, markers, coloring books, drawing pads, etc. She needs a couple of decent paintbrushes, as opposed to the crappy ones that come with paint sets.
6. the otter family set from Sylvanian families. The bunny family in her dollhouse is hopelessly filthy and needs replacing.
7. a good 'doctor, doctor' playset
8. a bucket of MegaBlocks
9. Barbie clothes, accessories, etc. A Barbie play set (She likes the bathroom one) would be great, but expensive.
10. Blue's Clues or Dora the Explorer DVDs/VCDs
In case it's relevant, her favorite brands are Disney Princesses, the aforementioned Blue and Dora, Powerpuff Girls, Barbie, and the Justice League. She also likes anything to do with cooking or toy food, housework, play makeup and jewelry, things that you push to light up or make sounds, and simple puzzles.

If any of you is planning to get her any of the above items, please do say so in the Comments section, to avoid duplication. She really wants the giraffe, for instance, so if no one else is getting her this, I'll be picking one up myself on Saturday.

Thanks to everyone who wants to help make our little girl's birthday more special!

recent Sage utterances

"Actually, my favorite food is sinigang."

(looking out the window at the nearby construction site) "That's amazing!"

"My heart is a cookie."

Still two weeks short of three years old, and she's using four-syllable words and poetic metaphor. Sometimes she's just so smart it's... well, amazing.

eat your greens

"No, no, no," Sage said, picking through her serving of chop suey at dinner last night. "I don't like this, or this, or this..."

"How can you not like that?" I asked, pointing at one of the summarily-rejected items. "That's baby corn; it's yummy."

"That's not corn," Sage replied, peering at it suspiciously.

"It's not exactly corn," her father tried to explain. "It's like corn, but it's small. It's just as yummy, though."

"It's baby corn," I repeated.

"Then where," Sage demanded, with an air of triumph, "is the Daddy Corn and the Mommy Corn?"
